06 – PICAXE-08M Pin Layout

The PICAXE-08M is a 8 pin PICAXE microcontroller and it is the smallest PICAXE chip in the range. The diagram on the right show all the pin configurations but I just want to go through all of the definitions for the sake of all the newbie’s. The information is also available in the PICAXE Manuals.

Description of PICAXE-08M Pin functions

Pin 1

Pin 1 is the +5V Supply.

Pin 2

The Serial In pin used in the programming of the PICAXE microcontroller.

Pin 3

Pin 3 has three functions. It can function as an Input with the name of In 4 (Input 4). It can also function as an Output with the name of Out 4 (Output 4) and lastly it can also function as an analogue input with name ADC 4 (ADC Input 4) used in Analogue to Digital Conversion (ADC).

Pin 4

Pin 4 can function as an Input with the name of In 3 (Input 3) and it can also be used as an infrared input, see PICAXE manual 2 for more detail.

Pin 5

Pin 5 has five different functions. It can function as an Input with the name of In 2 (Input 2).  Then it can also function as an Output with the name of Out 2 (Output 2). It can also function as an analogue input with the name ADC 2 (ADC Input 2).  It can also be used as a pwm Output with the name pwm 2 (pulse width modulation 2) and lastly it can be used to play a tune.

Pin 6

Pin 6 has three functions. It can function as an Input with the name of In 1 (Input 1). It can also function as an Output with the name of Out 1 (Output 1) and lastly it can also function as an analogue input with name ADC 1 (ADC Input 1) used in Analogue to Digital Conversion (ADC).

Pin 7

Pin 7 has three functions. It can function as an Output with the name of Out 0 (Output 0). It is also used as the Serial Out pin used in the programming of the PICAXE and lastly it is also used as an Infrared Output, see the PICAXE manual 2 for more details. 

Pin 8

Pin 8 is the 0V supply.
